Fading AGNs in Poststarburst Galaxies

چکیده
Abstract The role of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in quenching galaxies and driving the evolution from star forming to quiescence remains a key question galaxy evolution. We present evidence Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO survey for fading AGN activity 6/93 poststarburst galaxies. These six show extended emission line regions (EELRs) consistent with ionization past activity, analogous “Hanny’s Voorwerp” other systems where [O iii ] λ 5007 is bright enough be visible broadband imaging. Using infrared luminosities IRAS estimate current luminosities, we find that 5/6 have AGNs which faded peak luminosity required ionized EELRs. Given rate observe EELRs, typical EELR visibility timescale, an how often EELRs would visible, duty cycle during phase. timescale between peaks t ∼ 1.1–2.3 × 10 5 yr. this phase, spends only 5.3% time (or ON = 0.6–1.3 4 yr) its luminous rest spent “off” or low-luminosity length may explain why so few been observed despite feedback work.

Globular Cluster Populations in Four Early - Type Poststarburst Galaxies
We present a study of the globular cluster systems of four early-type poststarburst galaxies using deep gand I-band images from the ACS camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). All the galaxies feature shells distributed around their main bodies and are thus likely merger remnants. The color distribution of the globular clusters in all four galaxies shows a broad peak centered on g − I ≈...

This contribution reviews the properties of nuclear activity in nearby galaxies, with emphasis on results obtained from current optical surveys and multiwavelength follow-up observations thereof.
متن کاملRadio Agns among Luminous Infrared Galaxies
An analysis of radio and FIR emission in over 1500 IRAS selected galaxies produces a good linear correlation between radio and FIR luminosity, indicating that star formation in normal eld galaxies dominates the infrared luminosity in the local volume. Galaxies with clear radio-excess (deened as having at least 5 times larger radio ux over expected from FIR) are identiied as hosting a radio AGN,...
متن کاملTowards a Complete Census of AGNs in Nearby Galaxies: A Large Population of Optically Unidentified AGNs
Using Spitzer-IRS spectroscopy, we investigate the ubiquity of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in a complete (≈ 94 percent), volume-limited sample of the most bolometrically-luminous galaxies (LIR, 8−1000 μm & (0.3–20) ×10 10 L⊙) to D < 15 Mpc. Our analyses are based on the detection of the high-excitation emission line [NeV]λ14.32 μm (97.1 eV) to unambiguously identify AGN activity. We find that ...
متن کاملFIELD GALAXIES AND THEIR AGNs: NATURE VERSUS NURTURE
One of the biggest successes of the standard Big Bang cosmology is the prediction of the existence and black body nature of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Observations and measurements of the CMB radiation by COBE (COsmic Background Explorer), WMAP (Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe) and Planck show an almost isotropic blackbody radiation with temperature TCMB = 2.726 ± 0.010 K (Mather e...
